More Info on Generic Depo-Provera

When Will Other Generic Strengths Be Available?

As all of the patents for Depo-Provera have expired, drug manufacturers are allowed to make generic versions of this drug in the United States. However, no company currently makes generic Depo-Provera 400 mg per mL, the strength of the medication approved for use in renal and endometrial cancer.

It is unclear why a generic version of Depo-Provera in this higher strength is not available at this time. The demand for this strength may be too small for a generic manufacturer to make a profit on a generic version. Because it is unknown why a generic version is not yet available, it is impossible to predict when, or if, a manufacturer will choose to make a generic version of it.

Is Medroxyprogesterone Injection a Generic Depo-Provera?

No -- medroxyprogesterone is the active ingredient in Depo-Provera (as well as in a few other medications), but it is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.

In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
