Do Antibiotics Interfere With Depo-Provera Injections?

If you are using Depo-Provera® (medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection) and your healthcare provider prescribes antibiotics, you may be wondering if they will interfere with the Depo-Provera injections.

There have been instances where women who were using hormonal contraceptives, such as Depo-Provera, have become pregnant while taking antibiotics. This may indicate that antibiotics could make the contraceptives less effective. However, more research is needed to prove that this is the case.

If you are receiving Depo-Provera injections to prevent pregnancy, you may want to use a backup method of birth control while taking an antibiotic, just to be safe.
