Depo-Provera Use

Available by prescription only, Depo-Provera® (medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection) is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Depo-Provera is approved for use in preventing pregnancy and relieving certain symptoms caused by renal (kidney) cancer and endometrial cancer.
Depo-Provera helps to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thinning out the lining of the uterus, and thickening the cervical mucus. It can also help relieve certain cancer symptoms by slowing down the growth of cancer cells.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Depo-Provera for something other than pregnancy prevention or relief from cancer symptoms. This is called an "off-label" use. Some off-label uses of Depo-Provera include the treatment of the following:
