When and How to Receive It

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Depo-Provera include the following:
 
  • This medication is given as an injection into a muscle, every week to every three months, depending on the reason it is being used.
 
  • The injection is usually given by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting, such as a clinic. It is usually given in the buttocks (gluteal muscle) or upper arm (deltoid muscle).
 
  • Depo-Provera should not be used as a contraceptive for longer than two years, unless other birth control methods are not an option.
 
  • For this drug to work properly, it must be administered as prescribed. Make sure to keep all of your appointments with your healthcare provider to avoid missing a dose.

Side Effects of Depo-Provera
