Depo-Provera Drug Interactions
Prior to taking medications such as antibiotics, anti-seizure medicines, or corticosteroids, tell your healthcare provider if you are using Depo-Provera. Drug interactions may occur with these and a number of other medications, potentially increasing your risk for side effects or decreasing the effectiveness of the drugs. You may need to use another birth control method or adjust the dosage of your other medications.
An Overview of Interactions With Depo-Provera
Depo-Provera® (medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection) may potentially react with a number of other medications. Some of the drugs that can lead to interactions with Depo-Provera include but are not limited to:- Antibiotics
- Certain anti-seizure medications, such as:
- Corticosteroids, such as:
- Betamethasone (Celestone®)
- Cortisone
- Dexamethasone (Decadron®)
- Fludrocortisone (Florinef®)
- Hydrocortisone (Cortef®)
- Methylprednisolone (Depo-Medrol®, Medrol®)
- Prednisolone (Orapred®, Pediapred®)
- Prednisone
- Triamcinolone (Kenalog®, Aristospan®)
- Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
- CYP 3A4 inducer medications, such as:
- Aminoglutethimide (Cytadren®)
- Bosentan (Tracleer®)
- Carbamazepine (Carbatrol®, Epitol®, Equetro®, Tegretol®)
- Dexamethasone (Decadron®, Dexpak®, Maxidex®)
- Efavirenz (Sustiva®)
- Efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir (Atripla®)
- Etravirine (Intelence™)
- Fosphenytoin (Cerebyx®)
- Nafcillin
- Nevirapine (Viramune®)
- Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal®)
- Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
- Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
- Phenytoin (Dilantin®, Phenytek®)
- Primidone (Mysoline®)
- Rifabutin (Mycobutin®)
- Rifampin (Rifadin®)
- Rifapentine (Priftin®)
- St. John's wort
- Griseofulvin (Grifulvin V®)
- Protease inhibitors, such as:
- Amprenavir (Agenerase®)
- Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
- Darunavir (Prezista®)
- Fosamprenavir (Lexiva®)
- Indinavir (Crixivan®)
- Lopinavir and ritonavir (Kaletra®)
- Nelfinavir (Viracept®)
- Ritonavir (Norvir®)
- Saquinavir (Fortovase®, Invirase®)
- Tipranavir (Aptivus®)
- Retinoids, such as:
- Acitretin (Soriatane®)
- Bexarotene (Targretin®)
- Isotretinoin (Accutane®, Amnesteem™, Claravis™, Sotret®)
- Tretinoin (Atralin™, Avita®, Renova®, Retin-A®, Tretin-X™, Vesanoid®)
- Tazarotene (Avage™, Tazorac®)
- Tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron®, Lysteda®).
