Combining Depo-Provera With Other Drugs

Depo-Provera Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Depo-Provera is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Antibiotics
There have been reports of women becoming pregnant while taking antibiotics with hormonal contraceptives, including Depo-Provera. These reports suggest that antibiotics could make the contraceptives less effective. At this time, it is not entirely clear whether there is actually an interaction between these medicines, however. If you are using Depo-Provera as a form of birth control, you may want to use a backup birth control method while taking an antibiotic, just to be safe.

Anti-Seizure Medications
Depo-Provera can cause a loss of bone density, especially with prolonged use. Certain anti-seizure medications can also affect bone health. Taking these medications together may further increase your risk for bone loss, osteoporosis, and fractures. Talk to your healthcare provider about this potential interaction before taking an anti-seizure medicine with Depo-Provera.

Corticosteroids
Depo-Provera can cause a loss of bone density, especially with prolonged use. Corticosteroid medications can also affect bone health. Combining Depo-Provera with a corticosteroid may further increase your risk for bone loss, osteoporosis, and fractures. Talk to your healthcare provider about this potential interaction before taking these medications together.

Cyclosporine
Depo-Provera may increase the level of cyclosporine in your blood, potentially increasing the chance of side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely, and may give you a lower cyclosporine dose, if you take these medications together.
