Depo-Provera and Depression

Clinical studies have shown that 1 to 5 percent of people using
Depo-Provera® (medroxyprogesterone intramuscular injection) may develop depression. If you already have depression or a family history of the condition, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely.

Because depression can be a serious condition, make sure you contact your healthcare provider right away if you notice any symptoms of depression. If you develop depression while using Depo-Provera, you should not receive another shot.

(Click Depo-Provera Warnings and Precautions for more information on what to do if you develop signs of depression while using Depo-Provera. This Web page also describes other safety concerns to be aware during treatment with this drug, including who should not receive these injections.)
