Delavirdine Dosing

The usual recommended dose of delavirdine is 400 mg three times a day, which can be taken as either two 200-mg tablets or four 100-mg tablets. For the medication to work properly, follow your delavirdine dosing schedule as prescribed. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing resistance to the medication, thus making it less effective.

Delavirdine Dosing: An Introduction

There is only one standard recommended dose of delavirdine mesylate (Rescriptor®). As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Delavirdine Dosing for HIV and AIDS

The recommended dose of delavirdine for treating HIV or AIDS is 400 mg three times daily. This is taken as either two 200-mg tablets or four 100-mg tablets (three times a day). Delavirdine should be used in combination with other HIV medications as part of an HIV "cocktail" (this is known as highly active antiretroviral therapy or HAART).

General Information on Dosing With Delavirdine

Considerations for people taking delavirdine include the following:
  • The medication comes in tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth three times a day.
  • You can take delavirdine with or without food.
  • People who do not produce stomach acid (known medically as achlorhydria) should take delavirdine with an acidic beverage (such as orange juice or cranberry juice), as stomach acid is necessary to absorb the drug into the bloodstream.
  • Delavirdine 100 mg tablets (but not 200 mg tablets) can be mixed with water. Add four tablets to at least three ounces of water and wait for a few minutes. Stir the water and drink immediately. Afterwards, rinse the glass with water and drink the rinse water in order to make sure that you get the full dose (delavirdine can stick to the sides of the glass).
  • Try to take delavirdine at the same times every day to maintain an even level in your blood.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions about taking delavirdine. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing resistance to the drug, thereby making it less effective.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to delavirdine dosing, talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
