Side Effects of Atazanavir

Abdominal pain, nausea, headaches, and vomiting are some of the most common side effects of atazanavir. Typically, these side effects are minor and either don't require medical attention or can be easily treated. However, some atazanavir side effects should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, including an irregular heart rhythm, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and depression.

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with atazanavir sulfate (Reyataz^®); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Side Effects of Atazanavir to Report

Some side effects with atazanavir, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

Depression
An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice)
Signs of liver damage, such as:

Fatigue or a general ill feeling (malaise)
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice)
Tenderness near the liver (the upper-right abdomen)
Pale stools

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
Changes in the distribution of fat on your body (such as a "buffalo hump")
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

Rash
Hives
Itching
Swelling of the mouth or throat
Wheezing

Difficulty breathing.
