Atazanavir Drug Interactions

Calcium channel blockers, antacids, and certain antibiotics or antifungals may interact negatively with atazanavir. Drug interactions such as these can lead to increased or decreased drug levels in your blood, which could cause serious side effects or reduce the effectiveness of the medicines. Other medications that can cause atazanavir drug interactions include oral contraceptives, fluticasone, tricyclic antidepressants, and other protease inhibitors.

 

Atazanavir Drug Interactions: An Introduction

Atazanavir sulfate (Reyataz®) can potentially interact with several other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to atazanavir drug interactions include:
 
  • Antacids
  • Certain antibiotics and antifungal medications, such as:
 
    • Clarithromycin (Biaxin®)
    • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
    • Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
    • Rifabutin (Mycobutin®)
    • Rifampin (Rifadin®)
    • Voriconazole (Vfend®)
 
  • Certain arrhythmia medications, such as:
 
    • Amiodarone (Cordarone®)
    • Lidocaine
    • Quinidine
 
  • Certain benzodiazepines, such as:
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • Ergot medications, such as:
 
    • Bromocriptine (Parlodel®)
    • Dihydroergotamine (Migranal®)
    • Ergonovine
    • Ergotamine (Bellamine S®, Cafergot®, Ergomar®)
    • Methylergonovine (Methergine®)
    • Pergolide (Permax®)
 
  • Fluticasone (Flonase®, Flovent®, Veramyst®) or combination medications that contain fluticasone (Advair®)
  • Immune-suppressing medications, such as:
 
    • Cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®)
    • Sirolimus (Rapamune®)
    • Tacrolimus (Prograf®)
 
 
 
 
 
  • Pimozide (Orap®)
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as:
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).
