More Atazanavir Drug Combinations to Avoid

Immune-Suppressing Medications
Atazanavir may increase the level of some immune-suppressing medications in your blood. Your healthcare provider may need to decrease the dose of your immune-suppressing medication to prevent this interaction from occurring.

Irinotecan
Atazanavir should never be combined with irinotecan, due to the risk of dangerous irinotecan side effects.

Nevirapine
Nevirapine can decrease the level of atazanavir in your blood. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your atazanavir dosage or recommend a different combination of medications to prevent this from occurring.

Oral Contraceptives
Atazanavir may make oral contraceptives less effective. You should use a non-hormonal method of contraception (such as condoms) while taking the medication.

Other Protease Inhibitors
Taking atazanavir with another protease inhibitor may increase the level of both medications in your blood. Check with your healthcare provider before taking two protease inhibitors together. In general, this is not recommended, due to the risk of dangerous reactions.

Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors (PDE5 Inhibitors)
Atazanavir can increase the level of PDE5 inhibitors in your blood, increasing your risk of side effects. You healthcare provider may recommend a lower-than-typical dosage for your PDE5 inhibitor while you are taking atazanavir.

At this time, it is recommended that if you take sildenafil for the purpose of treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, you should not take atazanavir, as a safe and effective dosage of sildenafil for this situation has not yet been established.
