Amethyst™ (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol) is a combination oral contraceptive (birth control pill) that contains an estrogen and a progestin. It is taken by mouth once daily to prevent pregnancy. In some cases, it may also be prescribed for other uses, such as the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. This medication was shown to be an effective birth control method in a large clinical trial. In this study, for every 100 women who used the drug for a year, between 1 and 3 became pregnant.
