Welcome to the STD Channel
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual activity. There are at least 20 different types of sexually transmitted diseases. STDs are more common in the United States than in any other country in the industrialized world. A few examples of STDs include bacterial vaginosis (BV), gonorrhea, pubic lice, and HIV/AIDS.
There are a number of health problems associated with STDs, including cervical cancer and other cancers, liver disease, infertility, and pregnancy problems. The STD treatment a healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on the particular STD a person has. Some STDs can be treated with medicine or a shot. Others, such as herpes, cannot be cured, so treatment involves relieving the symptoms of the disease. Among the ways in which a person can keep from getting an STD are abstaining from sex, being faithful to one partner, and using condoms during sex.
Welcome to the STD Health Channel by eMedTV. Here you will find detailed information on STDs, including a discussion of their possible symptoms, more suggestions about how they can be prevented, and detailed statistics on how many people they affect in the United States.
